Forthcoming Events: more forthcoming in 2010
To quote from our last post, a while back: “News imminently on our next events, which will include a charcuterie workshop and tasting at Papadeli and the launch of member Andrea Leeman’s eagerly awaited book on Gloucestershire Food, at an interesting new venue…”
Well, the Andrea Leeman Gloucestershire Food launch took place at the Clifton Club, which was interesting, and was a great success: around forty people whanged back eels, perry and hommity a gogo amid late Victorian splendour, while simultaneously learning about and supporting nearby traditional food producers.
The charcuterie evening is still very much on the cards, news soon, and a number of other happenings are awaiting the attentions of a new Events Task Force to be created at the next Annual General Meeting, 29 March 2010, at the Glass Boat restaurant, courtesy of our member and benefactor, Glass Boat proprietor Arne Ringner. Details soon. There will soon be news, too, of the next event under the auspices of the pioneering Slow Music project, of Noche Cubana fame.
So don’t stop watching this space: just when you least expect it, something fabulous will be announced, and, following that, may very well happen.
Slow Dinner at Mitch Tonk’s new Bristol venture.
The last newsletter alerted you to the impending Mitchell Tonks Returns to Blackboy Hill Event, and a number of people have already put their names down. Now here are the full details.
The Date: Tuesday 26th May, 8 p m.
The Place: Rockfish, (formerly known as Fishworks), Whiteladies Road, Bristol
The Event: an exclusive Slow dinner, hosted by Mitchell Tonks, chef-proprietor, to mark the opening of his new restaurant.
Fishworks Bristol was the third in the highly successful chain Tonks started up in Bath. It had established itself as Bristol’s best fish restaurant and shop before its demise some months ago. Having gone on to prosper with his smart new Seahorse grill in Dartmouth, Tonks has now bought back the Bristol business and is currently preparing it to open as the Rockfish Grill and Seafood Market, in late May..In order to mark the re-appearance of one of Bristol’s more interesting restaurants (and a favorite of a good number of Slow members) we’ve done a deal to take the place over for a special Slow dinner right at the very beginning of its new life. The evening will be hosted by Mitch Tonks himself, who will show us the new premises, talk fish, and sign copies of his new book , Fish, (The Complete Fish and Seafood Companion) We’ve negotiated another cracker of a bargain, too: a glass of Prosecco on arrival and three courses, at £24 for members and £29 for non-members. Remarkable.
The menu:
Glass of Prosecco on arrival
Roasted Lyme Bay Scallops with garlic
Or
Slow cooked cuttlefish stew
Sea Bream ‘al cartuccio’ with rosemary, chilli, garlic and olive oil
Or
Market fish of the day grilled over charcoal with herbs and olive oil
Rhubarb fool
Or
Plate of local cheeses
Apart from the aperitif, drinks will be extra, and each person or group can order exactly want they want,, settling directly on the evening. Payment for the dinner, however, should be made in advance by cheque made out to Slow Food Bristol. Please specify your choices from the menu when booking, and contact us as soon as possible to liaise on seating plans if you’re a group wanting to share a table. We’ll do all we can to accommodate requests, but will have to work within the constraints of the rooms.
We need to sell 52 tickets to bring this off, but when you consider the brilliance of the deal and the fact that the Fiona Becket/Ocean Frugal Dinner achieved 45 a few months ago, with people turned away, we think it shouldn’t be a problem. However, we do need to get the booking confirmed as soon as possible, so please invite your friends, make up groups, etc as soon as you can. Non-members are most welcome, but this is of course the perfect excuse to join (online, please) and get an even more sensational bargain.
